Winter Break 2015 Closing Information

In preparation for Winter Break 2015 Closing, the Housing Office wishes to provide you with some helpful information which will help minimize stress as you prepare to leave Santa Clara University for the break! The Housing Office wishes you and your family a relaxing and joyous Winter Break!!

All residence halls, with the exception of the University Villas and graduate housing buildings, close on December 11, 2015 at 9:00PM! Please note this date & time as failure to checkout of your room by 9:00PM will result in an automatic charge of $25.00 per every 15 minutes you are LATE moving out for Winter Break 2015.


Action items to COMPLETE Before Leaving for Winter break!

  • Remove all perishable items from refrigerator
  • Unplug and defrost personal mini-fridge/rented mini-fridges the night prior to your departure and leave refrigerator door open; please do not unplug SCU Housing apartment refrigerators
  • Unplug all personal electronic appliances
  • Empty trash and recycling to the appropriate container located outside of your hall
  • Clean room and if applicable your common areas, bathroom(s), and kitchen; vacuum carpets and mop floors
  • Close and lock your windows
  • Turn off all lights
  • Turn off/down heat

When can I return for Winter Quarter?

The Residence halls will open for Winter Quarter on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at 11:00AM. Please make all travel plans accordingly as you will be unable to return to the halls prior to 11:00AM. 

Will I have access to my room during Winter break?

No, all undergraduate buildings, excluding University Villas, will be closed for the Winter Break. Resident ACCESS cards will be deactivated during this time.  For this reason, it is imperative you take everything you will need during Winter break with you (i.e. prescription medications, passport, etc) and remember to take with you any pet fish, plants or other items that need attention & care during the break.

If you find yourself in a dire situation and do need to retrieve any items left in your room, you must contact the Housing Office at 408.554.4900 to schedule an appointment to gain to your space. The Housing Office will review your request to determine if it is an emergency. Access will only be permitted in emergency situations and at the discretion of the Housing Office. You will be charged a $75.00 administrative fee.

The Housing Office will be open from 8:00AM - 5:00PM from December 14 through December 23 (excluding weekends). 

Santa Clara University is not responsible for the loss of, or damage to, personal property due to fire, theft, or other causes. The Housing Office recommends valuable personal property be stored off-campus during the break.

Room inspections during Winter break...

During Winter break, Housing & Residence Life staff will enter your room to ensure closing procedures were adhered to, to check smoke detectors, and to ensure window screens and room furniture are in place. Failure to complete these procedures will results in fines of $25.00 per item per residence and/or disciplinary action.

Avoid getting locked out upon your return for Winter quarter...

Remember to take your ACCESS card, PIN #, and key(s) home with you! Please store these items in a secure location at home and remember to bring them back to campus with you for your return in January! Due to the high volume of lockouts during the first 24-hours after a break, the Housing Office may fine up to $100 for lockouts during this period.


If your current roommate is leaving on-campus housing at the end of the Fall quarter, or you are currently residing in a double room without a roommate, please be sure your room is prepared and ready for a new roommate to move-in for the Winter quarter prior to leaving for the break! The second bed, desk, dresser and closet should be available for your new roommate's arrival. Failure to properly prepare your room for your new roommate will result in disciplinary fines/actions.

Return All Rented Textbooks...

Don't forget to return all rented textbooks to the Bronco Corner Bookstore prior to your departure from campus for Winter Break!


If you are leaving your bike on-campus during Winter break, it is recommended that you store it within your room.
