Construction of Learning Commons and Library gets under way

In the past, a library’s quality was measured by the number of physical volumes in its collections. But rapid advances in information technology have changed the role of libraries.

Now a library’s worth is gauged by its effectiveness in facilitating access to and integration of a wide range of information. The new design reflects that changing focus, affording ample opportunities to nurture the community of scholars at SCU. The new facility will host dozens of group study rooms, movable furnishings to facilitate spontaneous collaboration, onsite specialists cross-trained in information access and technologies, and unique “incubator” rooms that will offer easily accessible space to entrepreneurial faculty to explore innovative uses of educational technologies.

In the interim, a modular structure between the parking structure and the soccer field as well as the first floor of Nobili Hall, the former Jesuit residence, will offer library services. The new library may be the biggest project on campus, but far from the only one.
