Sit down, you're rocking the boat

As president of the student chapter of ASCE, Sourek is mainly interested in producing a floatable entry to keep Santa Clara’s name in the competition and to increase awareness of the school.

But the project provides a “win” for participants no matter how the canoe finishes in the competition, she insists. “This puts all the book learning into a practical application. We learn something in class, and by doing this kind of a project, we actually get to see what happens when you do it right or what happens when you do it wrong. You encounter challenges along the way that you didn’t even expect that you have to be able to deal with and find solutions for. Not everything, especially in engineering, comes out exactly as you design it or as it ‘should’ from your calculations.”
