Other real estate agents are frustrated that Jeff Cheney was an early player in a new community of multimillion-dollar homes. Cheney's real estate brokerage has sold more than $1 billion worth of homes in the community he represents.
John Pelissero, senior scholar in government ethics at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University and a political scientist who specializes in urban politics, said all public officials have a duty to separate their private and financial interests from their government work.
“Public officials are acting on behalf of the people, the citizens and residents of a community in this case, and they have a special ethical responsibility to act for the common good, and that means always putting the public interest before any private interest,” Pelissero said.
