Murray, Ian R.
Ian Murray joined the School of Engineering faculty in the fall of 1951, first in engineering science and then as a member of the mechanical engineering department. He taught at the University for 37 years. Among other courses, he taught Thermodynamics and Fluid mechanics. He and Professor Richard Pefley developed an integration of these fields, collaborating on the text, Thermofluid Mechanics published in 1966 by McGraw Hill. In the late 1960’s, Professor Murray designed a course, The Dynamics of Sailing, which satisfied the core lab science requirement, bringing students into the department at a time when enrollments were dropping. In 1963 he spent a sabbatical working with the Colorado Bureau of Reclamation doing a model study for the San Louis Dam spillway. He was one of 25 persons in the nation selected to receive grants to participate in a study of programmed learning by the American Society of Engineering Education. Ian Murray was an active member of Tau Beta Pi and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was an active member of the university community, serving on many committees, including serving as the Faculty Senate President.

Saad, Michel A.
Professor Michel A. Saad joined the Mechanical Engineering Department at Santa Clara University in 1959. He received his B.Sc. (Honors) from Alexandria University, M.Sc. from M.I.T., and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1956. He taught at Lehigh University for 3 years before joining SCU in 1959. During his tenure, Professor Saad spent three terms as Department Chairman (1963-1964, 1974-1975 and 1981-1984) and became Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs from 1988 until 1990. In addition he worked for four years for the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), implementing UNESCO’s activities in the field of science and technology in the Middle East and North Africa.
Professor Saad did research in combustion, fluid behavior under low gravity and energy systems. The research was sponsored by Lockheed, the United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Ford Aerospace and NASA. His research has extensive international publication in the area of thermo-fluids sciences including two textbooks “Thermodynamics, Principles and Practice” and “Compressible Fluid Flow, 2nd Ed.” Published by Prentice Hall. Professor Saad retired from the Deptartment in 2002 after 43 years service.
