Mission, Goal, and Objectives for Student Learning

Mission
The Department of Applied Mathematics at Santa Clara University strives to serve students and faculty members in the School of Engineering in three main ways: (1) by offering undergraduate and graduate courses in applied mathematics and statistics beyond the level of the calculus sequence, (2) by collaborating in research with faculty and graduate students in engineering and providing consultation, expertise, and assistance in applied mathematics and statistics and other related services to students and faculty, and (3) by furnishing the opportunity for students to pursue a masters degree in applied mathematics outside usual working hours.
The department endeavors to maintain a flexible curriculum to accommodate students wide variety of goals, backgrounds, and aptitudes and to hire faculty members with broad research and teaching interests. We expect our students, both undergraduate and graduate, to learn mathematics and its applications to their own engineering disciplines. Scholarship is encouraged, especially in collaboration with colleagues in the School of Engineering.

Goal

Undergraduate and graduate engineering students learn some topics in mathematics and some applications appropriate to their field of study.

Objective 1

The department affords engineering students opportunities to learn topics in mathematics and some applications in support of their degree or certificate program.

Objective 2

Students pursuing a masters degree in applied mathematics encounter a variety of topics in applied mathematics in support of their degree program and in preparation for the furtherance of their careers in industry or for teaching in a community college or high school.

Objective 3

Students pursuing a masters degree in applied mathematics demonstrate understanding of a variety of topics in applied mathematics.
