Nativity School Teaching Interns
The School of ECPPM offers scholarship support to intern teachers at the Sacred Heart Nativity School in San Jose. The school’s website (www.shnativity.org/history.php) gives the history of this very special school: “Sacred Heart Nativity School (SHNS) opened its doors in August 2001 to address the needs of boys in the Washington and Gardner Districts of San Jose. The school is co-sponsored by the Jesuits, Sacred Heart Parish and The Diocese of San Jose. SHNS's mission is to educate socio-economically disadvantaged boys in grades 6-8, who have the ability for college preparatory work but might fail to reach their potential. The school recruits young men who have the potential for success, are supported by at least one caring adult in their lives and are eager to participate in the program.” Initially, SHNS reached out to 20 low income, underachieving boys. Today there are 21 – 8th graders, 20 – 7th graders and 21 – 6th grade boys. They have also opened up Our Lady of Grace Nativity School of girls with 25 – 6th graders. Peter Pabst, S.J., a graduate of our Counseling Psychology program, is President of the School, and Kevin Eagleson, an SCU basketball star from the famous Bronco team of the late 1960’s, is principal. Currently eight teachers are in our master’s and credential programs: Becky Bausch, Dori Galvin, Brendan Lavell, Carlos Jimenez, Katie Nejasmich, Grace Carlson, Pablo Madriz, and Everardo Leon. Santa Clara University, through the School of ECPPM, provides education classes to help these teacher interns complete their California Teaching credential or to augment their teaching. Each year a few of the interns move on to new careers and new interns enter the program. We envision greater collaboration between ECPPM and SHNS in the years ahead, and are proud to be supporting this wonderful educational effort in our community. |
