& Welcome Weeks

The Welcome Weekend and Welcome Weeks schedule is combined into one colorful and detailed schedule! With this schedule new students can learn about a variety of events and opportunities designed to help them acclimate to the Santa Clara community and life in college. Summer Orientation

Santa Clara welcomed 1,163 freshmen from the Class of 2017 during the six Summer Orientation sessions in July. During each day-and-a-half session, freshmen and their parents learned about the curriculum, Residential Learning Communities (RLCs), student services, and opportunities to get involved. In addition, freshmen were able to register for their fall courses. Led by a staff of 27 Orientation Leaders, freshmen engaged in discussions about community values and in social activities. Fall Orientation

The final sessions for New Student Orientation will take place this month. The final session for freshmen as well as orientation for international students is September 18-19. Transfer students participate in a one-day session on September 20. Also during the week prior to the start of fall classes are adventure trips for freshmen: one is a leadership retreat at the YMCA Camp Jones Gulch in La Honda while the other is a backpacking trip in Henry Coe State Park in Morgan Hill. Kirk Glaser:
New California Writing

Kirk Glaser is a CSL Faculty Advisor who advises the Santa Clara Review which is the University's premier student literary magazine. He is also a Senior Lecturer in the English Department. This past spring Kirk and co-editor Gayle Wattawa released a literary anthology titled New California Writing. Focusing on the State of California, the anthology includes select writings by over 40 authors from journals, novels, magazines, and newspapers.. Learn more >>>

Gordon Young:
Teardown

Gordon Young is a CSL Faculty Advisor who advises the KSCU radio station, The Redwood yearbook, and The Santa Clara newspaper. He is also a Senior Lecturer in the Communication Department. This summer Gordon published his first book Teardown. From the perspective of a prospective home owner, Teardown is a biography of his hometown of Flint, Michigan, which has evolved from a prosperous and affluent community to an impoverished and dangerous one. NEW STAFF
Connie Chang (160x100)

Connie Chang, Assistant Director

Connie Chang is CSL's new Assistant Director for Student Organizations and Multicultural Learning. She will advise all registered student organizations (RSOs or clubs) as well as manage annual programs sponsored by the Office for Multicultural Learning. Connie earned her BA in Human Development from the University of California at San Diego. A year later she received her MS in Higher Education from the University of Pennsylvania. During the previous three years she served as the Coordinator of Student Activities at UCSD. She is originally from the Bay Area.

Rob Smith, Graduate Intern

Rob Smith is CSL's new Graduate Intern for Student Leadership. He will be assisting Lori Durako (Assistant Director for Student Leadership) with developing and implementing existing leadership programs in addition to laying the foundation for new programs. Rob received his BA in Communication from the University of San Francisco and played on the soccer team all years of his undergraduate eligibility. Currently he is a graduate student at USF in the Higher Education and Student Affairs Program. He is originally from Sacramento.
