Philosophy major Noelle Lopez (2009) was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for graduate study at Oxford University. She is the second student in Santa Clara University’s history—also SCU’s second Philosophy major and first woman—to win this highly prestigious award.

The Department of Philosophy offers courses in all principal areas of philosophy, but emphases include ethics, social and political philosophy, and history of philosophy.

 

Typically, over 80 of the 4500 undergraduates at Santa Clara University are majors in philosophy, and many students with other majors have elected to minor in philosophy.

Professor Shannon Vallor: 2010 Graves Award Recipient

The Santa Clara University Philosophy Department is delighted to announce that Shannon Vallor, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, is a 2010 recipient of the prestigious Graves Award in recognition of her outstanding teaching. Professor Vallor is but the most recent SCU philosopher to receive this award: previous Philosophy Department recipients are Professors Carol White (1947-2000; Graves Award recipient, 1985); Michael Meyer, 1990; and Scott LaBarge, 2004. Please join us in congratulating Professor Vallor on her remarkable achievement.
