Kern earned a B.A. in political theory from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973; a M.Div. Ffrom Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, in 1978; a M.A. Iin philosophy and religion from Western Kentucky University in 1979; a M.A. in systematic theology from the University of Notre Dame in 1982; and a Ph.D. in systematic theology from Notre Dame in 1984.
