Karen Fraser

Karen Fraser specializes in Japanese art and holds a Ph.D in art history from Stanford University. At Santa Clara she teaches a two-quarter sequence on cross-cultural interactions between Eastern and Western art as part of the core Cultures and Ideas curriculum. She also teaches classes in Asian art and the Western art history survey. Her research focuses on modern Japanese visual culture, particularly photography production, consumption, and reception within Japan, and the relationship of photography to class, gender, regional, and national identity. Her publications include “Studio Practices in Early Japanese Photography: The Tomishige Archive” in the spring, 2009 issue of History of Photography, and she is currently working on two book manuscripts on Japanese photography.
