The “Career Ladder” No Longer
The Palo Alto based non-profit, the Institute for the Future recognizes that “Old metaphors, including the basic concept of a ‘career ladder,’ will increasingly be more frustrating than illuminating in a world where a typical work portfolio cannot be planned any more than a few years out” (Future Work Skills 2020).
Rich with analytics and networking capabilities, LinkedIn can provide a vast array of student and alumni contacts and information tailored for your department’s needs. Need to find SCU alumni in a particular industry or company for a panel event or to serve as a contributing writer for a department newsletter? Want to contact alumni even when they are not in your network? Need data on where SCU alumni are living and working? Want to stay up to date on how our students must be using LinkedIn for their job search (93% of employers use LinkedIn for recruitment, Jobvite Social Media Survey, 2012)? Contact Elspeth Rossetti, erossetti@scu.edu, to arrange a LinkedIn tutorial for your department.
Use the University’s subscription to American City Business Journals’ “Book of Lists” to identify the largest companies in your discipline by location. This is a great resource for students to tailor their internship and job search and to also use LinkedIn to connect with alumni who work at particular companies.
