Bob Eberhart : Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council of Japan
Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014
Bob Eberhart, assistant professor of management, recently completed his co-chair role on the Innovation and Leadership Council of Japan, a business policy group making recommendations to both governments. At the invitation of the U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy, Eberhart attended ceremonies in Tokyo last month marking the end of the council’s statutory appointment.
Launched by the U.S. Department of State and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the council created several policy options for bilateral entrepreneurial development, including outer space programs cooperation and tax reform. The policies, accepted by both the White House and the Gaimusho, are now being implemented by both governments. For more information, refer to the council’s 2012 Report to Leaders.
"I was really surprised when I was asked to co-chair the council that I was originally just an alternate on,” said Eberhart. “I joined out of pure interest but was soon asked to lead the policy writing task force. I took that as an extreme honor. It was quite eye-opening and rewarding to create policy objectives for US-Japan entrepreneurial cooperation. It was a true bilateral effort and it shows how academic knowledge can positively inform and affect public policy."
