James is global Co-leader of Mayer Brown's Global Insurance Industry Group and has represented numerous insurers and insurance-related entities for more than 35 years on a wide variety of issues in California, across the US and globally. He is General Counsel to both The Surplus Line Association of California and to the Worldwide Broker Network. He has represented over 60 insurers in California's Proposition 103 hearings, the Dutch Association of Insurers in connection with the creation of the International Holocaust Commission, and the California Insurance Industry in creating the California Earthquake Authority. He co-founded the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation and as a volunteer organized Hurricane Katrina insurance claims relief efforts at the Astrodome.
Additionally, he represents non-insurance industries, including the nation's largest trucking company in saving over $130 million related to its self-insurance workers' compensation program helping to preserve 33,000 jobs nationally. He represents private equity, hedge fund and venture capital companies in connection with various insurance investments and represents the Insurance Information Institute and the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation on a pro-bono basis. He also represents many e-commerce companies involved with insurance-related and social media issues and co-founded an online insurance business. James holds seats on the board of the Global Women's Leadership Network and the National Board of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation. He was the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation Honoree at the Foundation's Sixteenth Annual Western Division Gala in May 2009 where he became the only law firm partner to join an impressive group of insurance industry leaders recognized for their commitment to charitable services.
