Course Descriptions

INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSES (IDIS)

IDIS 612. Management of the High- Technology Firm Seminar
Identification and analysis of business issues and problems that are particularly important or unique to high technology companies. Topics vary from seminar to seminar and include a selection from project management, production, marketing, personnel, investment decisions, expansion to international markets, banking, venture capital, pricing, technological transfer, relationships with government bodies and the media, and legal issues related to patents and trade secrets. The seminar is divided into segments of one or two sessions taught through case studies by executives and public officials. Prerequisite: completion of a minimum of 10 MBA courses. (3 units)

IDIS 695. Global Business Perspective
Through company sites and cultural visits, students learn to appreciate how business operates outside the United States. Country visits are bracketed by class sessions and pre-work followed by project presentations. Content varies based on the expertise of the faculty and the country visited. Past locations include Germany, France, China, New Zealand, and India. Prerequisites: Varies by course. (3 or 6 units)

IDIS 705. Leadership for Justice and Prosperity
This required course comprises two distinct modules designed to integrate course materials with practical issues of today. Module 1 focuses on the ethical implications of the day-to-day decisions made by managers. Module 2 looks at technology developments in local firms and how they may impact the Third World, and also how the disruptive technologies developed for the Third World may affect First-World firms. Prerequisite: none. Must be completed before taking MGMT 619 (Capstone). (1 unit)

IDIS 696. Experimental Course
Covers special topics; offered on an occasional basis. (3 units)

IDIS 697. Practical Training
In accordance with SEVIS regulations, practical training for international students is available exclusively for students with F-1 visas. This 1-unit practical training internship offers MBA/MSIS students the opportunity to apply techniques and methods learned at Santa Clara University as they acquire work experience. Course is graded pass/no pass and does not count toward degree requirements. Prerequisites: One year of full-time course work and a gpa of 3.0 or higher. (1 unit)

IDIS 853. Ethics and the Global Marketplace
Explores how social, political, ethical, and legal forces affect an organization’s ability to achieve its objectives and how an organization’s activities in turn influence these forces. Discusses how understanding that interaction is key both to enabling the organization to recognize and deal with external opportunities and threats and to its ability to respond to its environment in a socially responsible manner. Focuses on the ethical implications of the day-to-day decisions made by managers. Open only to WAMBA program students. (5 units)

IDIS 858. Global Business Strategies
Through company sites and cultural visits, students learn to appreciate how business operates outside the United States. Course content focuses on a one-week trip overseas. Open only to WAMBA program students. (3 units)

IDIS 891. Effective Group Dynamics
This course begins with group sessions and presentations at orientation and concludes with reflections during the program’s second term. Focus is on how to successfully work in groups and avoid common areas of conflict. Open only to WAMBA program students. (1 unit)
