S. Andrew "Drew" Starbird

Professor, Operations & Management Information Systems

Dr. S. Andrew Starbird became Dean of the Leavey School of Business on July 1, 2010, following a year serving as interim Dean of the Business School.

In his first year as Dean, he has led Business School faculty in developing a new approach to entrepreneurial education, formalized goals for international business education, launched the California Program for Entrepreneurship (CA.PE), and led the school-wide strategic planning project.

Among the foci for the strategic plan are revisions of both the undergraduate business and graduate business programs' curriculum, and an emphasis on providing students with additional support services such as business-focused career services for undergraduates. In addition, he will lead efforts to deepen the School's relationships with the Silicon Valley business community as well as increasing the prominence of the Leavey School of Business nationally.

Dr. Starbird is a professor of Operations and Management Information Systems in the Business School where he has taught since 1987. Dr. Starbird also holds a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Cornell University, an MBA in Agribusiness from santa Clara university, and a BS from the University of California, Davis. He has provided leadership in varied posts, including a stint as Director of the Food and Agribusiness Institute, a multi-disciplinary research program; chaired the Undergraduate Leadership Team of faculty and professional staff; as well as serving as faculty director of the School's Undergraduate Business programs.

Professor Starbird has taught operations management, statistics, and business analytics at the undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA levels, as well as conducting extensive research in quality control and management, supply chain management, food safety, and contracting. He has published in Naval Research Logistics, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Journal of Agricultural & Resource Economics, Agricultural Economics, and the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.

His scholarship has been recognized with a number of awards, including "Outstanding Contribution" to the Journal of Agricultural & Resource Economics, "Best Article" for the Journal on Chain and Network Sciences, as well as four Leavey School of Business Extraordinary Performance Awards (for exemplary scholarship, teaching, and service), the ACE Outstanding Faculty Awards, and the Dean's Outstanding Teaching Award.

Dr. Starbird also serves the larger public, most notably as a long-time member of the board of directors of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. He also consults with companies in the life sciences, agricultural, and high tech industries.
