Winter '14 Newsletter



On behalf of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, we'd like to share some of our upcoming events and exciting news and events of the last few months:
  • We celebrated the completion of the 2013 California Program for Entrepreneurship (CAPE), adding 27 entrepreneurs and 23 ventures to our growing list of CAPE alumni.
  • We partnered with the School of Engineering Office of the Dean to welcome Arista Networks President & CEO Jayshree Ullal to campus for the Fall CIE Speaker Series and welcomed Silicon Valley legend Regis McKenna to campus for the Winter CIE Speaker Series.   
  • Startup Expo 2014 brought 60 Silicon Valley startups seeking SCU interns to campus
  • VCIC News:  SCU competed in the Silicon Valley regional competition in February.
  • We celebrated Global Entrepreneurship Week with information sessions, speakers, and held joint events for business and engineering students
  • We helped student and alumni entrepreneurs with Office Hours for Entrepreneurs sessions
  • We sponsored 40 undergraduate and graduate students to attend the VLab Young Entrepreneurs: Under 30 and On Fire event
  • We continue to expand internship and career offerings to students at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Alumni and community partners continue to contact the CIE with these opportunities (or use our online form), which we are happy to share with our students.  
  • Coming up next:  Strategic planning, Spring CIE Speaker Series, Office Hours for Entrepreneurs, CAPE 2014

Congratulations 2013 CAPE Cohort
  CAPE celebration

The CIE recently congratulated 27 members of the 2013 CAPE Cohort on their completion of the programand look forward to their 23 ventures bringing jobs to our community.  The group's final weekend on campus, a fitting end to our Global Entrepreneurship Week activities, culminated in a pitch competition.   Since the program began in 2010, the CIE has: 

  • Received and processed more than 1,100 applications
  • Accepted 164
  • Enrolled 112
  • Congratulated a grand total of 95 on completion of the program for a total of 83 ventures

The CIE welcomed Silicon Valley marketing guru Regis McKenna to campus for the Winter CIE Speaker Series on February 5, 2014.  Regis shared his thoughts on marketing today, big data, and a few of his numerous stories about working with some of the most well known companies today.

Fall CIE Speaker Series Welcomes Jayshree Ullal, President & CEO of Arista Networks, November 18, 2013

The CIE welcomed Arista Networks President and CEO Jayshree Ullal for the Fall CIE Speaker Series as the signature event for Global Entrepreneurship Week.  Jayshree was presented with the School of Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award at the event by School of Engineering Dean Godfrey Mungal, co-sponsor of the event.

Startup Expo Connects SCU Students to Startup Internships

The CIE partnered with the SCU Career Center and undergraduate student club SCEO to bring Startup Expo to campus for the fourth year.  This unique internship and career fair is open only to area startups seeking SCU talent.  This free event draws approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate students of all majors.  Our 2014 Startup Expo was packed to capacity with 58 startups.

Global Entrepreneurship Week Recapgewlogo

The CIE was pleased to participate in the 2013 GlobalEntrepreneurship Week, offering students and alumni a variety of events including a Minor in Entrepreneurship information session open house, CIE Speaker Series event, a repeat screening of Something Ventured (Winter 2012 CIE Speaker Series event featuring Paul Holland), an SCEO (student club) and Engineering student social, and two sessions of Office Hours for Entrepreneurs—special thanks to CIE Advisory Board members Steve Troy and Gloria Wahl for meeting with students and alumni.

CIE Office Hours for Entrepreneurs Helps Students & Alumni

On a quarterly basis, the CIE brings in Silicon Valley experts to meet with students and alumni in 20-mintue one-on-one sessions for assistance with business plan review, pitch critique, presentation review, funding discussions or a general startup Q&A session.  Special thanks to our Fall and Winter Office Hours for Entrepreneurs experts, CIE Advisory Board members Jim Thompson, Carol Christopher and Doug Tsui.  

Additional Office Hours for Entrepreneurs sessions were held during Global Entrepreneurship Week.  We would also like to thank CIE Advisory Board members Gloria Wahl and Steve Troy for meeting with students and alumni.

The Spring Quarter sessions are scheduled for April 24, with Michelle Ellie Ahi.

Students also meet with the CIE on an ad-hoc basis year round for startup review, assistance and competition prep/assistance.  Can't wait for one of our quarterly sessions? Contact CIE Executive Director Dan Aguiar to set up a meeting.

The Venture

The story of double Bronco alum DennisO'Malley ('95 BA,'00 MBA) outlines the perfect dynamic of how the Santa Clara community never fails to network. While pursuing his MBA in 2000, he met his future co-founder and president Srinivas Penumaka ('00MBA).  Together the two co-founded ReadyPulse, an online feedback service that helps companies manage their most effective social marketing assets thru customer testimonials.

VLAB Young Entrepreneurs: Under 30 and On Fire

The CIE was pleased to sponsor the tickets for 40 undergraduate and graduate students to attend the MIT/Stanford VLAB event Young Entrepreneurs: Under 30 and On Fire held on January 21.  The panel of five entrepreneurs was moderated by Adam Draper, CEO and Founder of Boost Incubator.  Panelists included: 

Michael Carter, CEO at Game Closure, raised $12M to tackle the hardest problems in mobile gaming and is recognized by W3C for his initial design of the HTML5 WebSocket real-time technology that is used in all modern web browsers

Melody McCloskey, CEO at StyleSeat, a woman entrepreneur recognized in 2010 by Business Insider as a Silicon Valley 100

James Tamplin, CEO & Co-Founder at Firebase, a co-founder of a realtime application platform that allows developers to synchronize data instantaneously

Lat Ware, Founder at Crooked Tree Studios, a game developer who successfully launched a game with telekinesis like powers on Kickstarter

Marcus Weller, Ph.D., CEO & Chairman of Skully Helmets, the CEO of a heads-up display motorcycle helmet which won the coveted DEMO God award at their 2013 launch

Accelerated MBA Team Wins Internal VCIC Competition, Competes in Silicon Valley Regional

The Entrepreneurs Connection held their annual internal competition of the Venture Capital Investment Competition© on October 26.  The winning team went on to compete in the Silicon Valley Regional leg of this international competition.  Congratulations to Team SCU:
