Drew Starbird is the director of the My Own Business Institute and a professor of Operations and Management Information Systems in the Business School where he has taught since 1987. He served as dean of the Leavey School of Business from 2010-2015, after having served as acting dean in 2009, following the departure of Barry Z. Posner, who held the post for twelve years.
Dr. Starbird has provided leadership in varied posts, including a stint as Director of the Food and Agribusiness Institute, a multi-disciplinary research program; chaired the Undergraduate Leadership Team of faculty and professional staff; as well as serving as faculty director of the School's Undergraduate Business programs.
Professor Starbird teaches operations management, statistics, and business analytics at the undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA levels, as well as conducting extensive research in quality control and management, supply chain management, food safety, and contracting. He has published in Naval Research Logistics, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Journal of Agricultural & Resources Economics, Agricultural Economics, and the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.
His scholarship has been recognized with a number of awards, including "Outstanding Contribution" to the Journal of Agricultural & Resources Economics, "Best Article" for the Journal on Chain and Network Sciences, as well as four Leavey School of Business Extraordinary Performance Awards (for exemplary scholarship, teaching, and services), the ACE Outstanding Faculty Awards, and the Dean's Outstanding Teaching Award.
Dr. Starbird also serves the larger public, most notably as a long-time member of the board of directors of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. He also consults with companies as diverse as Becton Dickinson Immunocytometry Systems and Fresh Express.
