BayBio Presents: Lunch & Learn: Strategies for Protecting Biomarker Innovation in the US and Abroad

February 19, 2014

Recent decisions by the US Supreme Court have found both isolated DNA and methods of assessing drug treatment efficacy by measuring metabolite levels are not eligible for patent protection. From these decisions, it’s become clear that the hard work of identifying a gene, or set of genes, which are correlated with a disease state is not enough to receive patent protection in the US. In contrast, isolated DNA is eligible for patent protection in many jurisdictions outside the US, such as Europe. Moving forward, companies will likely consider innovation protection strategies which include some mix of patent and trade secret protection.

Churchill Group Presents: Data Privacy Trends 2014

January 30, 2014

Time: 5:30 PM Registration | 6:00 PM Buffet | 7:00 PM Program
Location: Marriott Union Square, San Francisco | Directions

Managing privacy practices isn't about having your attorney draft a privacy policy and periodically auditing your data practices to make sure you don't need to update that privacy policy anymore. Today, companies need to have a clear understanding of the data they collect online via sites, apps and ads, as well as what they collect offline in stores, call centers, and CRM systems. They must know who ELSE -- advertisers, networks, or other business partners -- is collecting customer information from their properties, and why. Harder still, privacy today is about providing users with powerful and user friendly tools to manage their preferences. And all this needs to happen on a 24x7 real time basis across all channels globally. Don’t miss this lively, up-to-the minute conversation about emerging trends and strategies to get ahead of privacy requirements and needs, without stifling the growth of the ad-tech ecosystem that holds so much economic promise. This program is presented in support of Data Privacy Day on January 28, which is an international day of awareness designed to educate people on privacy issues and how to safeguard personal information.

SV Forum Presents Quarterly Venture Breakfast: 2013 - The Year in Review

Tuesday, January 28th, 2014
2550 Hanover Street
Palo Alto, California  94304

A year ago, we predicted that 2013 would see less overall VC investment but more ROI growth than 2012. At this installment of the Quarterly Venture Breakfast, we'll take a look at last year's ideas and suppositions and build a map to where we are now. Did the predicted spaces--enterprise IT and storage, personalized healthcare, big data, machine learning, robotics, and PaaS--get the lion's share of funding? Have cleantech and consumer web startups begun to lose VC attention? Did VC reach increase overseas? Let’s take a look and see if the predictions came true, where the disruptions were, and how investors are feeling about 2014.
