2009 Homecoming & Grand Reunion Weekend Countdown
There will be something for everyone! Will you be there?  RSVP today before it is too late!

From October 15-18 more than 1,500 Santa Clara University alumni from all over the country are expected to flock to the Mission campus; for Santa Clara University’s four-day event, Homecoming & Grand Reunion weekend.

“This Grand Reunion is one of our most ambitious and inclusive events to date,” said Kathryn Kale ’86, executive director of the Santa Clara University Alumni Association. “We’ve filled the weekend with a variety of events and activities to ensure that everyone from the class of 1929 to the class of 2009 can remember, reconnect, and renew their commitment and family ties to SCU.”

While open to all alumni, the Homecoming & Grand Reunion weekend has special events planned for 10 classes of Broncos, whose graduation year ends in ’4 or ’9. Specific reunion gatherings are also planned for the Ruff Riders, who are celebrating their 10th year as an athletic student organization, past immersion-trip participants, and past rugby and football players.

You are invited to participate in multiple courses, events, and parties over the span of the weekend. Already proving to be popular are a career workshop on How to Navigate a Difficult Job Market; Prof. Fred Parrella’s course Will Love and Marriage Survive in a Postmodern World; various class parties, and a 5K Bronco run/walk. There will also be a homecoming picnic, campus, residence hall and library tours, a golf tournament, sporting events, networking opportunities, and more.

“Our alumni are well-known for their loyalty to SCU and for maintaining close friendships with one another for decades,” said Jim Purcell, vice president for university relations. “The gusto with which they’ve embraced this Grand Reunion is just further evidence of what makes the SCU family so special.”

SCU Alumni & Students Mexico Immersion Trip
November 20-24 Come Build Hope

Meet new friends, work with current students, and help transform a family's life for ever!  In 2009, over 100 students and alumni worked together, including Esau Herrera '72, JD '76 and his daughter Kiara Herrera '12, to build 4 houses for the poor outside of Tijuana, Mexico.

In participation with Amor Ministries, a non-profit interfaith organization whose mission is to provide housing for the poor, SCU alumni and students will spend four days constructing homes using basic materials and simple hand tools. Alumni will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in work and solidarity with the poor.

President's Speaker Series
Globalization: Boon or Bane for Humanity?

On Thursday, Oct. 15, Janet Napolitano ’79, secretary of Homeland Security, will kick off the fourth annual President’s Speakers Series and the Grand Reunion.

In her lecture, “Homeland Security in a Networked Age,” Napolitano will address the following questions: What is the role for the Department of Homeland Security in our networked, 21st century world? What kinds of threats does our country need to be prepared for? How can ordinary citizens become more involved in our national preparedness efforts?

As Secretary, Napolitano manages a department with 225,000 employees and a $55 billion budget whose mandate is clear: to keep America safe. In the early months of her tenure, she has traveled to Pakistan, Mexico, Ontario, and Ireland to drive security efforts in shipping, transportation, cyberspace, and border security.

“Security cannot be the role of the Department of Homeland Security alone. Everybody has a role,” she says. “We cannot do it by ourselves.”

The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Mayer Theatre. General admission tickets are $25 each; seats are limited.

For more information or to order tickets, visit the President’s Speaker Series Web site.
