Franks, Cody
Cody Franks '10 beings hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in honor of his sister, Jessie Marie Franks, who died in March 2009 from cystic fibrosis. While he hikes from San Diego to British Columbia, a 2,650 mile journey, Franks will carry his sister’s ashes with him, “so she’ll be there with me in spirit,” he said. "I promised her I'd do the hike two weeks before she died." Franks has officially dubbed his effort the "Franks Walk Memorial Charity Hike" since it is in memory of his sister and he hopes to raise money for cystic fibrosis research as well. Franks also has cystic fibrosis, but a much milder form than his sister suffered from. His journey will begin April 17, his 25th birthday, and he will be using a GPS tracking meter to allow viewers to virtually hike the trail with him. The hike begins in Campo, which is just east of San Diego at the Mexican border. He will travel the entire John Muir Trail, the Sierra Nevada, and the Cascades before ending up in Manning Provincial Park, B.C. To donate to Franks Walk or to read more about his and Jessie's story, visit www.frankswalk.com.

Carnazzo, Gina

Gina Carnazzo MTS ’10 is a volunteer English teacher at a mission school in Lome, Togo. She writes:  “I have always wanted to come to Africa. I am drawn to the people and the land (and the animals—though there aren’t any safari animals in Togo). But it always seemed like an impossible dream to travel here. Then, when I met so many people from African countries at JST, it began to feel more possible. I chose the Canossian Daughters of Charity because I liked what I read about their organization (VOICA), and I wanted to be involved with a Catholic organization. The core of my coming here is this: I have been showered with love and gifts all my life. I feel filled with love—overflowing, sometimes—and I just want to share that love. I did not come to Africa to convert anyone—just to share Christ’s love with the people here. I am not bringing Christ’s love, though, because His love is already here (something I learned at JST).”

Bruce, Lindsay

Lindsay Bruce ’10 made appearances on this season's NBC reality show The Voice.

Her early accomplishments helped set her on a path that led to an appearance on “The Voice,” but it was a long, sometimes difficult journey. At 13, the Santa Rosa native wrote a book and a song about having lost her uncle on 9/11. In high school, she became an international model and local celebrity. All along, though, she wanted to write and sing her own songs, so after graduating from Santa Clara University, Bruce headed to Nashville to pursue the one dream that still eluded her.

But for Bruce, the journey was a humbling experience. She was a struggling songwriter in a town where everybody is a struggling songwriter. For five years, Bruce developed her craft, learned what she could and performed in nearly empty halls. Always optimistic, though, she pressed on. A break came after three years in Nashville and at the very moment she was thinking of giving up on Music City once and for all.

“It was kind of a perfect storm of bad things,” said the 25-year-old who made it onto one of the celebrity team's on The Voice, where singers compete for a recording contract. “My landlord was selling the house, my roommate was moving, the production contract I had was expiring and my job ended. I was basically getting ready to move back home.”

In one of the crazier turns of her young life, she ended up auditioning for “The Voice” coaches on TV in front of thousands of people. Her journey to that point made her feel that she had nothing to lose.
