Pierce, Lloyd

Lloyd Pierce ’98 has been hired by 76ers coach Brett Brown as assistant coach. Pierce had previous stints with the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, and Cleveland Cavaliers. The San Jose native played for Santa Clara University from 1994-98 and played professionally in Mexico, Australia and Germany before returning to Santa Clara to join then-coach Dick Davey's staff.

O'Brien, Steve

On July 7, 2012, Steve O'Brien '98 wed Julianne (Visbal) O'Brien '04 in the Santa Clara Mission Church with over 40 fellow Broncos in attendance. It was truly a great day to be a Bronco! Today, the couple resides in Annapolis, MD, where Julianne works as a civil engineer with Bay Engineering, and Steve serves as the Naval Academy Athletic Association's Associate Athletic Director-Development at the United States Naval Academy. The O'Briens enjoy regularly returning to the Mission Campus for a variety of SCU events and are looking forward to making their next trip back this October for Steve's 15-year reunion.

Seasoned IP executive Michele Moreland ’89, J.D. ’98 has been appointed to oversee SITO Mobile's IP strategy. The company is a leading mobile engagement platform provider. Prior to joining SITO Mobile, Michele was the director of acquisitions for RPX Corporation where she oversaw the assessment, valuation, acquisition and licensing of patents against clients. Prior to RPX Corporation Ms. Moreland worked as a Partner at McDermott Will & Emery and as an Associate at Cooley Godward LLP focused solely on patent litigation.

McKenzie, Meredith

Meredith McKenzie J.D. ’98 was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown ’59 to the Dental Board of California. McKenzie has been vice president and deputy general counsel at Juniper Networks since 2012. She was senior director of intellectual property at Symantec Corporation from 2006 to 2012, director of litigation, licensing and IP for Cypress Semiconductor from 2001 to 2006 and corporate counsel and director of IP at Enuvis Inc. from 2000 to 2001. McKenzie was an associate for Howrey LLP from 1998 to 2000 and patent agent and design engineer at Intel Corporation from 1993 to 1998.

She came from Latham & Watkins, where she worked in the firm’s emerging companies practice. Ms. Lorenat represents start-up and emerging companies on a variety of corporate matters as well as venture capital firms in their investments in start-up and early-stage companies. She also represents major corporations in connection with mergers and acquisitions.

Layfield, Jill

Jill Layfield ’98 has been named the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Founded in 1996 in Park City, Utah, -- an ecommerce leader in selling premium outdoor equipment -- became a controlled subsidiary of Liberty Media Corp. (ranked 227 on the 2010 Fortune 500 list) in 2007. Jill has been with the company since 2004, when she saw a posting for a marketing position and decied to send over a resume. Little did she know she’d not only uproot from the San Francisco bay area to Park City, UT, but that she’d also move up through the ranks from Backcountry’s Director of Customer Marketing role to become the VP of Product Development in 2009 and COO in 2010. Prior to joining the Backcountry team, Jill most recently held a Senior Manager of Customer Marketing position at, where she managed customer acquisition, retention and loyalty, partner marketing, and retail business development programs. She’s also held marketing positions with Cisco Systems, Infogear (a startup focused on the marketing for Internet appliances), and 8x8 (a manufacturer of videoconferencing products and a VOIP service provider). Jill graduated from Santa Clara University with a BA in Communications. When she’s not tearing down the Backcountry hallway to her next meeting, she loves to climb, trail run, ski, and mountain bike with her husband, daughter, and two dogs. Meghan Lang '98 and Tim Smith were married June 11 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. Don McCarthy, a friend of the bride and groom, officiated. McCarthy was the one who first introduced the couple. The wedding attendants included maid of honor Katie Lang, the bride's sister; groomsmen Joe Lang, the bride's brother; and Kelly and Evan Smith, the groom's sons. They will make their home in San Francisco.
