Freshman Dorm: Swig

Elisa (Eidson) Lotti ’89, M.A. ’92 married George Lotti ’90 in 1997. She is a currently the project specialist at Sylvandale Middle School in San Jose, Calif., and was a teacher for 20 years prior to changing educational roles. Lisa and George live in the Willow Glen area of San Jose, where they also run Unconditional Love Animal Rescue and Placement, a nonprofit organization that has rescued approximately 2500 animals from local shelter euthanasia lists since its inception in 1999. In their spare time, they love wine tasting, golf, Tahoe, and snuggling their four kitties and two pups.

My wife Monica ’90 and my two daugters are settling back into Asia, though they are missing friends in Germany. They still get to summer and see family at Christmas at our place in Incline Village, but China is a far cry from Germany!"

Michael R. Johnson ’92, M.A. ’93 has been hired as the new Middle School Principal at Escuela Campo Alegre, an international school in Caracas, Venezuela. He will be moving to Caracas in August along with his wife Christina, daughter Danielle (9), and son Derek (6). Mike is currently assistant principal at Carmichael Middle School in Richland, WA.

Recently he was appointed to the Middle School Principal position at the Anglo-American School of Moscow for the 2014-2015 school year. He will move to Moscow this summer with his wife, Christina, daughter Danielle (14), and son Derek (11).

Respected intellectual property attorney Alexandra J. Horne J.D. ’92 has joined Hoge Fenton, a leading Northern California law firm. Practicing together most recently at the firm of Lewis Roca Rothgerber, Brody-Brown and Horne have expertise in the areas of trademark counseling and prosecution, including portfolio analysis and strategic counseling, domestic and global registration and enforcement, domain name issues, and licensing. They will be based primarily in the firm’s Silicon Valley office.

Horne, an IP practitioner of more than 20 years, counsels clients on domestic and foreign trademark registration and licensing and enforcement, including opposition and cancellation proceedings in the USPTO. Horne’s clients, which range from startup to well-established, come from a diversity of industries, including semiconductor, software and other technology, mobility, Internet, banking, entertainment, education and wine.

Michele Hales J.D. '92 is the managing partner at Hales & Hales, a San Jose Familly Law Firm, with offices in both Santa Clara and San Benito Counties. She is the President of the Board of Directors of Emmaus House, a domestic violence shelter in San Benito County, and is Vice President of the Baler Backers Athletic Organization, a nonprofit group which provides funding to the Athletic Department of San Benito High School. Michele and her husband Chris live in Hollister, Calif. with their three very active children.

Kyle Guse J.D. '92 joined Baker Botts LLP as a partner in the firm's Palo Alto office.

Guse has completed more than 100 public offerings and M&A transactions for clients that include venture capital funds and investment banks in the life sciences, technology and clean-tech sectors. He has focused much of his practice on counseling rapidly growing companies through public offerings and mergers and acquisitions.

He has been recognized by Legal 500 as a leading lawyer in his field of practice. Prior to joining Baker Botts, he was a partner in the Silicon Valley office of McDermott Will & Emery LLP.

Santa Clara dentist, Dr. Alan Frame ’92, now offers treatments that can transform smiles and improve dental health, including dental implants and teeth whitening. He is proud to serve the community in which he grew up. Frame is a a member of the Tao Kappa Omega and Omicron Kappa Upsilon, academic dental fraternities, as well as the American Dental Association. He is an avid sports fan and enjoys talking about football, baseball and other athletic events.

Flynn, Joseph

Joseph Anthony Flynn '92 was named one of Silicon Valley’s 50 most influential Irish-American people in the tech world in 2012 by the Irish Technology Leadership Group.

Flynn is the CEO and co-founder of the fast-growing Lavante, Inc., a profit recovery and supplier information management company.

In 2009, Flynn received recognition as one of the 40 leading executives under the age of 40 by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal.

Flynn serves on the board of directors of Work2Future, the Silicon Valley Workers Investment Board. He is both a member at large as well as the chairman of the finance committee.

Photographer Dan Dion ’92 just published his second book, Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond Between a Soldier and His Service Dog (Roaring Brooke Press, 2014). A children's book told from the point of view of a service dog, it features a day in the life of co-author and disabled veteran Luis Carlos Montalvan in New York City.

Crowley, Paul

SCU religious studies and pastoral ministries professor Paul Crowley, S.J., STL '92 has been appointed editor of the journal Theological Studies by its board of directors.

Fr. Crowley will continue teaching at Santa Clara while he serves in this capacity.
“Fr. Crowley’s appointment as editor of this prestigious journal of theology is a great tribute to his abilities as a theologian, writer and teacher,” said Santa Clara University President Michael Engh, S.J. “At a time when theology is being shaped more and more by the lived experiences of all people, Fr. Crowley will bring to this appointment a deep awareness and professional rigor.”
Founded and sponsored by the U.S. Society of Jesus, Theological Studies is a Catholic scholarly journal that serves the Church and its mission by promoting a deeper understanding of the Christian faith through the publication of research in theological disciples. It is located at Marquette University, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Through refereed articles and reviews of noteworthy books, the journal aims to recover and to help make accessible the riches of the theological tradition, and to present significant developments in current theology. It is published quarterly in English for an international readership.
Fr. Crowley is a native of Sacramento, and received a  B.A. from Stanford University, an M.A. from Columbia University, a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union, and an S.T.L. (Licentiate of Sacred Theology) from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. His research focuses on the intersection of systematic theology with modern thought.

Michel Courtoy MBA ‘92, an experienced EDA executive and angel investor, has joined the Zocalo Tech, Inc, an Austin, Texas electronic design automation company’s Board of Directors. Courtoy began his career in design engineering and software engineering at Intel. He managed product marketing for layout verification software at Cadence Design Systems and held executive positions at Quickturn Design Systems, Osprey Design Systems (which he also co-founded), Aptix Corporation and Frequency Technology. As vice president of marketing for Silicon Perspective, Courtoy created the market for silicon virtual prototyping and was a key player in the company's acquisition by Cadence in 2001. He served as a vice president at Cadence Design Systems before becoming the CEO at Certess. He led Certess through sales growth to a successful acquisition by SpringSoft in 2009. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of Edxact, DeFacTo and X5 Systems. He holds a BSEE from Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium; an MSEE from University of California, San Diego; and an MBA from Santa Clara University.

Michel Courtoy MBA ’92, EDA entreprenuer and verificiation expert, has joined Breker Verification Systems’ board of directors. 
Courtoy began his career at Intel in design engineering and software engineering. He managed product marketing for layout verification software at Cadence Design Systems. As vice president of marketing for Silicon Perspective, Courtoy created the market for silicon virtual prototyping and was a key player in its acquisition by Cadence in 2001. He served as a vice president at Cadence before becoming the CEO at Certess, leading Certess through sales growth to a successful exit by acquisition. Courtoy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from University Catholique de Louvain, Belgium; a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from University of California, San Diego; and an MBA from Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, Calif.
Since its founding in 2003, Breker’s mission has been to improve upon existing verification technologies, especially as more and more chips become SoCs with embedded processors. Effective verification of such designs requires high-quality, self-verifying test cases running on the processors. These test cases must exercise a wide range of functional scenarios to ensure that the SoC can support the necessary concurrency, system-level and software functionality while meeting performance requirements. Simon Chiu '92 was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the National Catholic Education Association, representing Catholic high schools in California, Nevada, Hawaii and Guam at the national level. He will be responsible for: continued leadership in the ministry of Catholic secondary education, communicating NCEA goals with other Catholic educators and leading regional meetings of Catholic educators and principals in the West.
