Bannan Institutes: Archbishop Michael L. Fitzgerald | Santa Clara Lecture: A Reflection on Christian-Muslim Relations Since Vatican II

4:30 PM to 6:00 PM

Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald will deliver the annual Santa Clara Lecture, "To Recognize and Develop the Spiritual Bonds that Unite Us" (John Paul II): A Reflection on Christian-Muslim Relations Since Vatican II.

Archbishop Fitzgerald currently serves as the Papal Nuncio to Egypt and delegate to the League of Arab States, which has 22 member states from across the Middle East and North Africa and whose headquarters are in Cairo. Before his move to Egypt, Archbishop Fitzgerald was based in Rome for 35 years, where he served for a time as President of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue.  Archbishop Fitzgerald's interest in interreligious dialogue may have stemmed from having a wide circle of friends while growing up who were "not all Catholics and not all Irish." Born of Irish parents in Walsall, Birmingham, he pursued his dream of becoming a missionary priest and heading to Africa. He has a doctorate in theology from Rome's Gregorian University, a degree in Arabic from London University and taught at the Pontifical Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Rome, of which he was the director for many years.  He is the co-editor of Interfaith Dialogue. A Catholic View (Orbis, 2006).
