The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics would like to welcome Michael Garanzini, S.J., as the newest member of the Ethics Center Advisory Board. The board is composed of distinguished members of the off-campus community, and provides ideas and counsel from an independent perspective. The board also assists in planning and fundraising, and enhances communication between the Center and its external constituencies.
Fr. Garanzini has a deep pool of experience in higher education to share with the Ethics Center in his advisory role. He holds a B.A. in Psychology from Saint Louis University and a Doctorate in Psychology and Religion from the Graduate Theological Union/University of California, Berkeley. He has taught at the University of San Francisco, the Gregorian University in Rome, Rockhurst University, and Fordham University. Additional academic appointments include four years as academic vice president at Saint Louis University, and two years as special assistant to the president at Georgetown University.
From 2001 to 2015, Fr. Garanzini served as president of Loyola University Chicago. Under his leadership, Loyola grew in national recognition as an innovator in higher education, thanks, in large part, to the establishment of Arrupe College, the first Jesuit community college in the United States.
Along with his new role on the Ethics Center advisory board, Fr. Garanzini also serves as president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU). Prior to his role at AJCU, he served as Secretary for Higher Education of the Society of Jesus, and Chair of the Board of Directors for the International Association of Jesuit Universities.
Don Heider, executive director of the Ethics Center, along with the rest of the Ethics Center, is grateful to welcome Fr. Garanzini to the advisory board.

He has a remarkable track record of innovative leadership,” Heider said. “He is also committed to the work of ethics and making the world a more just place. So he was an easy choice for me, and we are fortunate to have him helping us guide the center and the crucial work we do each day.”
With his extensive background in higher education, the Ethics Center is excited to have Fr. Garanzini’s insight and experience to help the Center flourish in its future work in ethics.
